Description

Jan Goorissen and Tony Overwater

Commissioned by Chamber Choir Novo Cantare and based on poems written during World War I by Isaac Rosenburg and Marian Allen.  This work is a fusion of jazz and classical music, with improvisation playing a large part in the expression of the subject.  It is the portrayal of the futility of war, of pain and anguish, and of love and loss.  The freedom in the written music and improvisatory jazz style is in direct contrast to an act of war: the act of ordering a soldier’s death. The haunting melodies and spine-chilling musical moments, together with the direction to use simple props, provides the performance with an added dimension which transports the audience into another sphere.  Stray Sands is scored for soprano voice, SSATB choir, tenor saxophone, percussion, ruby gamba (electric viol) and/or electric guitar and double bass.
