Review by Nicci Whitaker, Arco
Paul Sudlow
Commissioned by renowned cellist and director John Todd. This work uses the full chromatic and expressive range of the cello to great effect, employing a variety of musical styles which explore a range of sonorities in subtle variation form. The opening bars introduce a simple rising theme in rich close harmony. A jazz-based variation follows, featuring an energetic pizzicato. This gives way to a quirky Viennese Waltz before the opening theme reappears in a passionate climax. Parts vary in difficulty from grade 5 to 8.
